Housetraining: VERY important

Our puppy was house trained in less than two weeks.  He peed in the house three times.

Housebreaking a puppy takes patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement.

Housebreaking a puppy takes patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Here are some steps you can follow:

  1. Create a schedule: Establish a routine for feeding, playing, and potty breaks. Puppies usually need to go outside to pee after they wake up, eat, drink, and play.

  2. Choose a designated potty area: Pick a spot outside where you want your puppy to go potty. Take your puppy to that spot every time you take them outside to help them associate that spot with going potty.

  3. Use a command: Pick a phrase like "go potty" or "do your business" and use it consistently when you take your puppy outside. This will help your puppy understand what you want them to do.

  4. Supervise your puppy: Keep a close eye on your puppy when they are inside to watch for signs that they need to go outside, such as sniffing, circling, or whining. If you cannot supervise your puppy then they should be in their crate or pen.

  5. Reward good behavior: When your puppy goes potty outside, immediately praise them and offer a small treat. Positive reinforcement will help your puppy learn that going potty outside is a good thing. You can get an enzymatic cleaner that removes all traces of the smell so that your dog is not attracted back to the same spot.

  6. Clean up accidents: If your puppy has an accident inside, clean it up immediately with an enzyme cleaner to eliminate the odor. Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners, as the scent can attract your puppy back to the same spot.

  7. Be patient: Remember that accidents are part of the process, and it may take a few weeks or even months for your puppy to be fully housebroken. Stick to the routine, stay positive, and your puppy will learn.

Consistency is key, so it's essential to stick to the routine and be patient. With time, your puppy will learn where to go potty and become a well-behaved member of your household
